Dr. Sewell grew up in Franklin, TN where he attended Battle Ground Academy. He graduated with honors from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. He earned his M.D. at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Sewell spent two years in the United States Air Force. Dr. Sewell also did 2 years of general surgery and 4 years of urology at VUH.

Dr. Sewell and wife, Cynthia, have been married for over 40 years and raised two sons. Nate Sewell, M.D. is a plastic surgeon in Virginia, and Malcolm Sewell, D.V.M., is a veterinarian in Nashville. Dr. Sewell is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys fly fishing and sea kayaking.
